Tooth extractions are a fairly common procedure that we perform and have a few basic things to watch out for. We are always happy to answer any questions you may have!

Bleeding

Following a tooth extraction, you will be sent home with some gauze over the extraction site to mitigate the bleeding. Some bleeding is to be expected for an hour or so following tooth extraction. We will send you home with some extra gauze so you can change it out if you need to. The bleeding should be fairly minor and ought to lessen significantly throughout the day.

In the days following extraction it's normal for the site to ooze some blood or a pinkish fluid, so don't worry if it happens. At this point, a clot should have formed in the extraction site. It is important that you don't use straws, cigarettes, or anything that requires you to make a sucking motion with your mouth, as this can pull the clot free from the site and can result in serious infection.

Swelling and Healing Go Hand In Hand

You will experience some swelling following a tooth extraction - swelling is a normal part of the healing process. Swelling usually peaks around the second or third day following tooth extraction. Feel free to apply a cold compress to the swollen area to help bring the swelling down.

Oral Hygiene

It is very important to keep your mouth clean following a tooth extraction. Infection is a real issue following any oral surgery or procedure and keeping your mouth clean helps to reduce the risk of infection significantly. The day of the extraction, brush, and floss as you normally would, being careful to avoid the extraction site. In the days following tooth extraction continue your brushing and flossing as normal and make sure to rinse your mouth out with some warm salt water anytime after you eat.

Pain Management

Feel free to take OTC pain relievers like Advil and Tylenol to alleviate minor discomfort. For more severe pain we will prescribe you a narcotic. Take all medications according to the instructions and always pay close attention to the dosage guidelines.

Take It Easy

It's very important that you take it easy for several days following a tooth extraction. A rise in your blood pressure can result in bleeding at the extraction site and a higher risk of infection.
